your questions answered

What oils can I use to soften the wax

To soften earwax and maximise the efficacy of your ear wax removal appointment, we aim to ensure the removal of as much excess wax as possible. It is essential for the ear wax to be adequately softened prior to your visit. Therefore, we recommend that you "prepare your ear wax" by administering either Otex Express or olive oil ear drops for approximately five days prior your appointment. For further details on the appropriate drops to use, please call us prior to administering and follow the provided link for more information:  https://www.otexear.com/range/express-ear-drops/ The longer the ear drops/oil is allowed to remain in the ears, the simpler the wax extraction process will be.

What are the advantages of water irrigation

Pumping water into the ear canal to flush out any ear wax (wet method). This is typically performed using an electronic machine that regulates water temperature and pressure. This is a very warm and comfortable procedure and will be used if there is not a dense build-up of wax. The client may have some water left in the ears afterward, but this should disperse within 24 hours.

What are the advantages of microsuction

As a dry method we do not pump any water into the patient’s ear, the aim is simply to extract the wax. This is good news for patients with any history of ear surgery, mastoid cavities, or scarred or perforated ear drums. In these circumstances, water irrigation is very much contraindicated.

From what age can you have it done

Children from the age of 14 years can have the procedures done, but they must have a parent/guardian present. Children below this age must consult a doctor/paediatrician.

Can I fly after the treatment

The answer is simply NO.  You will have to wait a minimum of 7 days post-procedure.

Which treatments will stop me from having the procedures

  • If you've had an ear infection in the past 4-6 weeks
  • Inflammation found in the ears
  • If blood is found in the ear canal during the examination
  • If you have a cleft palette
  • A history of a recent ear operation
  • If you are receiving cancer treatment
  • There is evidence of acute otitis externa (infection of the ear canal) with pain & tenderness of the pinna
  • History of a mucous discharge

What are the symptoms of ear wax build up

You only need to have earwax removed from your ear if it’s causing symptoms, or if your ear needs to be examined. Symptoms of earwax build-up can include:

  • hearing loss (the most common symptom)
  • your ear feeling blocked, full or uncomfortable
  • earache
  • tinnitus (ringing sound in your ear)
  • vertigo (feeling dizzy and sick)

Are there any complications/side effects post-treatment

Many people experience some side effects from ear irrigation. These side effects are not typically as serious as the complications discussed above, but they can be uncomfortable for 24 hours after.  If you experience pain or discomfort that gets worse instead of better or have any other symptoms, make an appointment to see your doctor. If you experience severe pain, make an appointment to see them right away in case you have a perforated eardrum or other ear damage.

Common side effects of ear irrigation include:

  • temporary dizziness
  • ear canal discomfort or pain
  • tinnitus, or ringing in the ear
